Snozz Snares Top Sprint Spot

Leading trainer Jason Mackay has won three national championships over the years and took a giant step towards a fourth when Snozz (Bombastic Shiraz x Special Osti) scored in a best of the night 30.12 in the NSW National Sprint Championship final eliminator over 520 metres at Wentworth Park on Saturday night 23 August.

Twenty Year Wait: 1988 National Distance Championship

The National Distance Championship was inaugurated in 1969, four years after its template the National Sprint Championship had been introduced to the Australian racing calendar. The first running of the grand final took place over 722 metres (790 yards as it was then) at Wentworth Park . Given the status of the course it is perhaps a surprise that the next time Wentworth Park played host to a grand final wasn't until the 20th running of the event, in 1988.

The Night the Boxes Failed: 1971 National Sprint Championship

The National Sprint Championship series has undergone a number of changes to its format and structure since the first event was conducted back in 1965. With greyhound racing extant at night in only New South Wales and Victoria (racing was conducted during the daylight hours in Queensland and Tasmania ), the early series of championships were basically match ups between the best sprinters from the two former states. This state of affairs continued until the mid-1970s.
